Introduction to Ephesians

Why should we study Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (or any book of the Bible for that matter)?

I. Authority of the Church (1:1a)

      A. The facts of apostleship

      B. The fact of God’s sovereignty

II. Identity of the Church (1:1b)

      A. Holy people living in a pagan world

      B. Faithful believers in union with Christ

III. Agenda of the Church (1:2)

      A. The experience of grace and peace

      B. The access to grace and peace

Conclusion: Unless we recognize the authority of God’s Word, embrace our identity in union with Christ and thereby accept God’s agenda for our life, we shouldn’t waste our time with a careful study of this book of Ephesians. Will we . . .

      A. Recognize the authority of God’s Word?

            1. Authority of the church

            2. Authority in the home

            3. Authority of the government

      B. Embrace our identity in union with Christ?

            1. Crucifixion and burial of who we were apart from Christ, in union with Adam.

            2. Resurrection of the new self who is alive (through the Holy Spirit) to God.

      C. Accept God’s agenda for our life?
