Ephesians 2:19-22

 

Exegetical/Homiletical Idea:

 

As a believer you are incorporated into God’s kingdom and church, you are established on the Scriptures and Jesus Christ, and you are experiencing growth with the church in union with Christ.

 

Introduction (Lead) Idea:

 

I. Incorporation (2:19)

So then

 

A. Past (2:19a)                                  B. Present (2:19b)

you are no longer                                but you are

 

1. Former Citizenship Situation         1. Current Citizenship Situation

strangers                                                   fellow citizens with the saints

 

2. Former Family Situation                  2. Current Family Situation

and aliens,                                                  and members of the household of God,

 

II. Establishment (2:20)

 

A. Foundation—the apostles and prophets (2:20a)

built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

 

B. Cornerstone—Christ Jesus (2:20b)

Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,

 

III. Intention (2:21-22)

 

A. Growing to be a holy temple in the Lord (2:21)

in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

B. Being built together as a dwelling place for God (2:22)

In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
